On Homage to Bernd and Hilla Becher
The way we see the world and the way we document the world are separate. The tendency is to remove the man made in order to show the natural even when the man made has infringed so much on the natural as to effect the experience of it. The lens is pointed, the image framed (or edited) to intentionally show what is not there. In taking photographs we present something that is not real even though it is presented as a representation of reality as our framing of it makes reality a false reality. Although the photograph isn’t doctored, it is nonetheless a lie.
The photography of Bernd and Hilla Becher consciously capture what is there in a straight forward (literally), objective and utilitarian manner. The rigor of the work allows, topologies to emerge of recorded industrial architecture (water tower, kiln, grain silo). There is a utilitarianism, honesty and intentionality to the work.
Along the path there were two types of infrastructure that emerged. In an homage to Bernd and Hilla Becher I tried to capture and record them when they were found in the landscape in a straight forward (literally) objective and utilitarian manner.
