On Hebrew language and Human Culture
Language is more than an alphabet, words and rules of syntax, it is foundational for culture. The Hebrew language is 6,000 years old and is a living language spoken by millions everyday. The chances are that you don’t speak Hebrew, but that doesn’t mean Hebrew doesn't matter to you. The opposite, it does. This is part of human culture that connects to all of our lives in seen and unseen, in known and unknown ways. Judaic religion and traditions are integral to the Hebrew Language. Anti-Semiticism seen this way can be understood not just as being anti-Jewish but as being anti-human and a form of cultural genocide.
About the photo of NO JEWS ALLOWED painted on a rock: The day before publication I discovered this offensive vileness attempting to hike down Topanga Creek from town to the ocean with my friend Nirvan Mullick at the following location: 34.07937,-118.59445
On Crispr
CRISPR is an acronym for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. Once humans were able to genetically sequence prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells they noticed repetition of certain similar genetic material in multiple single cell organisms. From this observation came, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology.
On Humans Becoming God
We have come from sitting around watching flames dance to making a fire hotter than our sun. We have invented ships that travel under the sea for months at a time. We have developed machines that can extend our vision beyond the spectrum of light that our optic nerves see. We can look into the human body without cutting into it with X-ray, magnets, radiation and sound. We can look so far into space that we see back in time. We have built jets that travel miles in the sky traveling close to the speed of sound that can take us anywhere on the planet. We have developed rockets that can leave the earth. We have developed technology that allows us to modify and create new life. We have become Gods. God help us.
On The Gene To Explore
Maybe we have been misreading the story of Icarus all these years. Maybe it wasn’t about hubris and the arrogance of youth but rather the gene or behavior or the combination that makes us want to explore our world by following the sun. It is perhaps the reason we as a species seem to love sunsets. Yes, it must be that. Keep walking. That’s what we were made to do. Keep walking.
